KTA1 - Analysis Of A Short Film 5

ColourBleed

http://www.bbc.co.uk/filmnetwork/films/p00ktwvp

After a women is cruelly stamped on the hand catch a virus that turns her hand black, which ends up spreading throughout the city she lives in causing its 'downfall' and her death.

The main character to this story has a distinct style which could be called emo. She wears short hair and has various piercing on her face. This show a representation of what people of stereotypically like in urban areas in the modern age. However all other people shown in the film do not have a such distinct style and wear clothes and look like average people that you see on a day to day basis within a city.

The setting of the world looks like a typical small urban settlement, with run-down areas. Which is probably the reason for the choice of the main character style. The urban setting also means that the colour in the film is very dull with various shades of grey. Which contrasts well against the colourfull computer generated imagery used.

This film is always following our main character and shows her from various angle throughout the film mainly shoulder shots and medium close ups. This allows for lots to happen without constantly switching angle which allows for a simple method of story telling that doesn't require much concentration. This also allowed for many impressive computer generated effects in the film which at some points dominate the shot.

Breakfast

http://www.bbc.co.uk/filmnetwork/films/p006rfz3

The purpose of the film is to display the message of  "The food we eat has a story to tell". The film is animated and the story is told through the pictures displayed on a series of wooden blocks that are often used as a toy for young children. This means that the majority of the video is shot from various close up angles. Which make it easier to see the image and also allows the editor to present the story in certain ways as the film is not show room just one close up angle.

The pictures on the wooden blocks are painted and give it an innocent feeling towards it as this style of painting is often found on old toys and mugs etc. This means the story is presented in a interesting way as the story consist of how animals are abused in the process to get food for us to eat for breakfast. This gives the story an incredibly dark tone which was quite unexpected given how it is presented on a child's play toy.

Two and Two

http://www.bbc.co.uk/filmnetwork/films/p00ny05m

The film takes place within a class room where a teacher is teaching a Maths lesson, he teaches that 2 + 2 = 5. However the a student insists that the correct answer is 4 and is punished against the strict regime of the school.

The students of the school all wear white shirts and black trousers (excludes a tie) a traditional school uniform. Whereas the teacher wears a full suit (excluding tie), This distinguishes easily between the student and teacher. The teachers height and clothing both help to give him dominance over the class as black has connotations of fear, mystery or power.

The film is primary shot from the back of the class room showing how compact the room is while also showing us all the students and content of the class room. For the majority of the first half the shots flick from various positions around the class room mainly shots of the teacher. Extreme close ups are also used for scene when they are writing the sum out etc. This gives us a clear view of what is happening while at some points been a effective way to create tension.

The class room students all look alike which adds to the fact that the school has authoritarian regime. (this could also be just be because of the origin of the students that makes them alike) The students while been obedient when the teacher is present also have the urge to rebel and protect one and other from been caught out like any other person who would be trapped in such a place.

The authoritarian regime is made clear in the film by the students and how they act in with complete an utter obedience and how the teacher teaches in almost an abusive manor. It is also made clear when the top students appear in the last half who speak in synch and wear armbands that resemble ones worn by Nazis and other dictators throughout history.

KTA1 - Analysis Of A Short Film 2

Big Society

http://www.bbc.co.uk/filmnetwork/films/p00g3m73

The story takes about the 'struggles' of an ex-military officer who believes in using violent methods to clean the streets of his country. The film is shot in the style of a documentary and is seven minutes long. The film flicks from shots of him baking a cake and shots of him discipling people on the streets while he narrates his story over the top.

The ex-military officer looks like a plain ordinary man, which makes it hard to believe that he is ex-military as he does not fit the stereotype of an former solider. The man also has two children, which adds to his ordinary lifestyle. The man looks to be early thirties and wears a beige t-shirt in the shots of him talking and baking a cake. This makes him look like a peaceful man and adds to the ordinary aspect of his character. Whereas in the shots of him on the streets show him in dark clothing (dark trousers, jacket etc) this portrays him as a more menacing person not only by his clothes but also the way he walks and his facial expression. This shows his transition in personality throughout the story. This is meant to be an ironic story so why he is doing this is just the writer attempt to be comedic. Portraying an arguably accurate representation of what some people think but do not act upon it in such an extreme manor.

Other people featured in the film are the people that he attacks. These character wear the typical clothing you would expect from a teenager/gang members or just average looking citizen ranging from baggy trousers and hoodies to jeans and leather jackets. This also shows us how people in society judge other people based on their clothing giving them the opportunity to put you into social categories.

Shots in this film change the tone quite dramatically. As the shots of him cooking are shoulder shots and the camera is still and does not move. It also and has peaceful looking backgrounds (inside of his house or his back garden). Whereas the shots in the street are often group shots or shot from quite a distance, the camera is also shaken a lot to giving it a rushed look or quite action driven. Also close ups are shown on the street but mainly of the victim squirming etc. This shows the contrast between his peaceful family life of baking cakes to beating litterers on the streets. This shows the irony in the story and is presented so that this is intention of the video.

Analysis Of A Short Film

The Last Man On Earth

How does the film represent one characters identity through the element of Mise-en-scene?

The characters gender is male, he looks and is dressed like an ordinary man as he wears a plain grey T shirt. Which shows him as quite an ordinary man. The colour grey is a standard, ordinary colour therefore this depicts him as an ordinary person. The location of the main scene is in a pub/bar which is where a man would stereotypically spend his spare time more than a women would.

The film shows the man to be roughly 30 years of age, he also looks middle class (he is wearing average clothes, which indicates he is part of the majority. The majority in class is the middle class), we can tell this by the way he is presented. He has scruffy hair and has a beard, and he is also sweating this makes him look like he has had a tough time, which fits with the theme of the film as he is the last man left on earth. The lighting in the room he is in is very dark apart from the one beam of light directed at the man. This is to set the mood of him been the last person left. The room he is in is a pub/bar which also connotes that he is an older person, as the diegesis is of a world where he is the last man left the most likely place for him t go is somewhere where he is relaxed, and a stereotypical man would most likely go to a pub/bar. This makes the verisimilitude strong as it depicts what are ordinary stereotypical man would do in a place like that.

The man's ethnicity is Caucasian, due to this and his location (an average looking street) this would imply that he is an ordinary man. The lighting because it is focused on main character we can easily identify all his features and his skin tone is easy to identify.

In the opening scene and establishing shot is used, it shows us a clear view of the street, and it is abandoned. We can tell this by the positioning of cars. This makes the verisimilitude strong as it clearly shows implies the diegesis of the man been the last one on earth.  When the man walks into the bar a long shot is used again to show the abandoned element. It also uses a canted close up of the man using his phone. This has a mysterious element to it as we have had no speech up till this point and we still have not had any confirmation of what is happening. At the end of the video uses extreme close up on the phone, to clearly indicate that someone is ringing him.

LO1: Analysis Of 5 Audio Visual Promo & 5 Trailer Analysis's

MTV Ident

Purpose

The purpose of this Ident is to advertise the station MTV in between shows, videos and other content that airs on their channel.

This is an effective form of promotion that reminds the viewer of the station and keeps it fresh in their mind. It is also nicer to view an Ident promoting the channel rather than a totally unrelated advert. It help create a style that is well known as their particular style which is recognizable and helps the viewer associate things that resemble or remind you of it with MTV, therefore is an effective use of advertising.

Form

This is an Ident, an Ident is a clip shown on television between programmes to identify the channel. It is a form of promotion and reminds the viewer of the station they are watching and their style and content.

This is an effective form as it is short and does not last the length of an advert meaning it is quick and to the point and does not convey as much information as an advert of other form of audio visual promotion. However allows a simple short message to be delivered instead. In this case the Ident uses various animation tracks flowing around a city and spelling various words like "happy" this subconsciously tells the viewer to feel that emotion along with the other words. This is content that is suitable for  this form of advertising as if this content was used in an advert it would drag on too long and would loose the viewers attention, therefore is an effective form given the purpose and the content used.

Content

The use of camera angles in this Ident are predominately low angle, close ups and wide angles shots. These are all used to show the scale of the blocks and to make them look larger this connotes fear and the power of the blocks to the audience. Throughout the Ident the screen is also shaking this is an effect edited to make it look like a fast forward on a tape when you get the jagged edges, this is used a lot in action trailers. This also reinforces my previous statements of the first half being sad and lonely and has implications of fear. As we get to the second half the camera angles are still the same but there is heavy use of wide shot, these will be used to show the transitions.

Meaning

During the Ident we see animated solid black objects that flow in straight lines moving around urban landscape while rippled sounds play, during this the lines start to form into letters then into words, which connote a sad, lonely, dull and dark feeling. Halfway in this dull black feeling is uplifted by the lines changing colour and become multicoloured and spelling words like "happy" this is obviously denoting a happy feeling which is reinforced by the music becoming upbeat using techno and has an overall happier tone. The words also start to spell words related to MTV like "music" and "bass" confirming to the viewer that this is promoting a channel that shows off music content. This makes the Ident more relevant to the audience. After this the tracks then write MTV in the format of the logo before ending by cutting to black.

This content does not require the viewer to concentrate and is short, relevant and promotes the station achieving its purpose and proving a suitable form to use this content. As the narrative is to show the transition between dark and dull surroundings to happy, light and colourful. Which is implied that this transition happened due to the appearance of MTV. Which could connote to the audience that MTV is hear to bring happy thoughts and feelings to the audience as opposed to the sad and lonely looking beginning. Which also could imply that this is the viewer before the appearance of MTV.

Genre

The genre of the Ident is music. We know this because MTV is a music station and the video promotes it using animated blocks while playing rippling noises then transitions into and upbeat and colourful style, this sort of content is common on modern channels especially ones that cover music. A channel with similar style would be content from E4 however their style is drastically random and often unrelated.

We also know it is of the music genre due to the words spelt out during the Ident like "bass" and "music", which refer to elements of music.

Audience

People who would see this content would be people viewing MTV as this would only play during the transition period between shows.

This also would mean the viewer would not want to see an Ident that would require high concentration. Therefore using content that is somewhat simple is suitable especially using subliminal messaging.

A-Ha - Take On Me Music Video

Purpose

The purpose of this video is to promote the song "Take On Me" by "a-ha". By telling the a story of a romantic fantasy using pencil sketch animation.

This was incredibly successful showing us a unique music video due to its visual appeal. Creating one of the most memorable visualization ever and would be mimicked in various other mediums in the future. See "Family Guy", "The Lego Movie", "Volkswagen Advert (2013)".

From

The form is a music video, a music video allows a certain amount of time to be used (usually 5 mins maximum) that would not be available in other forms of promotion like an Ident and therefore gives room for a longer narrative or just general content. Here we have the story of a girl who is transported to the world of a comic book and returns with a man who she falls in love with. This sort of narrative could not be accomplished in any other form of audio visual promotion. Even in this case you could argue the story is rushed and often doesn't make sense. Obviously the music video is not intended to be realistic and intends to present a piece of fiction (which there is no boundaries) and focuses on the feeling transmitted to the audience.

This form allows visual complementarity to go along side the music and in this case has relevant lyrics the obvious one being the repeated line of "Take On Me" which could connote either "come with me" to the girl or literally directed at the men from the race "take on me" as in a fight.

Some music videos do not have relevant visual and intend to create something memorable rather than relevant (this would also depend on if the music had lyrics in the first place). See "Nicky Romero - Toulouse". In this case we have both creating something very memorable and relevant lyrics (depending on your interruptions).

Content

In the beginning of the music video in the comic we have multiple close ups, this is either to show rapid movement of the race beginning or an excuse to animate less. When we see inside the cafe and are still shown close ups and two shots this is used to move the pace of the video quicker than using establishing shots, close ups are also easy ways to show peoples facial expressions quickly and then can move to the next shot, since this a quick paced music video this is needed.

Inside the comic the lighting and scenery is all white, this is to fit with the animation so that it is smooth. Inside the cafe the lighting is from the above lights giving a yellow tint, this is to show it is a typical cafe using standard lighting. In the house at the end there is a red tint used to connote danger to the audience to show something is not right.

The music video is animated using pencil sketch animation with live action combining then in a technique called rotoscoping. This is where live-action footage is traced over frame by fame. This is to give the most realistic movements possible.

Meaning

The story is told from the perspective of a girl (actress: Bunty Bailey) who is reading a comic book in a cafe about motorcycle sidecar race, when suddenly the man who wins the race (singer: Morten Harket winks at her and invites her to come into the comic book by reaching out of the comic book into the real world. She then takes his hand and enters the comic books universe and becomes animated. The man then proceeds to show the girl what he really looks like by walking behind what looks like a mirror. Which he is dressed in the typical style of a motorcyclist (leather jacket etc)

We are then shown various band members of A-Ha paying instruments from various shot types in both animated form and in real life. We then are shown the women running the cafe bin the comic book the girl was reading. Suddenly back in the comic book the couple are interrupted by two of the men from the race (who lost) who attack them with a pipe wrench in the process breaking the mirror. The couple run away and are perused by the men from the race. Whilst occasionally cutting to shots of the band members.

During the pursuit the girl escapes through a opening in the wall and is transported back to the real world to the surprise of the café's customers and staff. She runs home and continues to read the comic book, she then cries looking at the lifeless body of the man in the comic book. She then turns to find that the man is behind her struggling whilst he switches between his animated and real self which he overcomes to reunite the couple.

The meaning behind this content is to show the story of a romantic fantasy and made clear by the fact that this is fictional and has little sense of realism as shown by the pace of the narrative and the general world swapping idea. However as said before to is intended to be this way and focuses more on the story and its closure.

Genre

The genre of this music video is New wave as characterised by its pop style that was relevant in the late 70's and mid 80's. "Take On Me" was recorded in 1984 (music video was filmed in 1985) which proves its genre to be New wave as it is mid 80's. The use of voice using low tone voices and then uses a high pitched falsetto voice to drag lyrics is also a technique used in New wave songs and many other genres at the time.

The music video also is part of the Synthpop genre for its use of electronic music that is heard within the early stages of the song before the lyrics start. It is also used at any other point lyrics are not present, making its main purpose to fill the gap when lyrics are not used to accompany the pop/rock.

Audience

The audience for this music video would be anyone interested in this particular genre of music, the band or anything else to do with music. Given its content is would be suitable for most ages and could be shown to a wide audience as it is does not have gore, swearing. Instead it has implied violence that is not seen and would not be understood/noticed by a younger audience.

Citroen C4 Advert

Purpose

The purpose of the advert is to advertise the new Citroen C4 car. With the specific tag line of "alive with technology". This to show the audience that the car has lots of technology (gadgets etc) within the car, to show this they have made the car come alive to look like a robot that transforms into the car. Obviously the real product does not do this but the purpose is to convey that message.

Form

The fo
rm of this is a advert. This would be played on television and on internet to widen the audience and varies in length depending on the content, usually it is roughly 2- 3 minutes but in this case is 30 seconds.

This is a suitable form as for its length it allows a small portion of advertisement. In many cases they will show you a scene of maybe a story and then at the end give a tag line, narration, or logo to confirm what it is. In this case we have a short scene that ends and is backed up by a narration a tag line and the company logo.

Content

An establishing shot opens the advert to show us they are in a winter environment and also introduces the car. The time is day and the scenery is of a European looking setting covered in snow, probably northern Europe. The time is day which connotes the whole introduction as a test drive in the morning. As the car transforms the camera tracks up to show the height and scale of the robot. We then see the angle from the robots foot to confirm to the viewer that the robot is skating, we than have various other angles like over the top and close up to show off the car and its skill in skating connoting that the product is alive with technology by the fact that it moves like a human. It also shows us a long shot and then a group shot at the end to get both the robot and the people inside the shot which confirms the scale of the robot and the actual car as it transforms back and the intelligence of the robot. Establishing its purpose of being an advanced car - "alive with technology".

Since the car is silver and the scenery is white they look very similar and blend well, silver is also a standard colour for a car, this possibly connotes that their car looks ordinary but is actually very special. Due to the similar colour to stand out the group of people wear red since they are small in comparison and would not be as visible in grey, black  or white.

Meaning

The content of the advert. Involves a group of scientists getting out of the Citroen it then transforms (CGI) into a humanoid shape and starts to skate on the surrounding ice. After this is comes back to the group and a sheet of snow is thrown at the scientists. There is then a voice that says the tag line.

This is used to convey the tag line that the car is in fact alive with technology which is shown by the fact that it moves to its own will rather than remote as artificial intelligence this is denoted by the fact that it does a robot skates which is a task only humans can do.

The advert also has electro/house playing over the top which connotes a robotic feel to it and is a suitable choice of music given the intentions of the advert.

Genre

The genre of this advert is anti-realism as it presents are transforming car that is also a giant skating robot, which is the product cannot do nor is it possible. It uses anti-realism to show us that the car is literally "alive with technology" by it transforming and taking a humanoid shape and doing a task only possible by humans, which could connote that the car is so advanced that it can do difficult task using it's technology.

Audience

The target audience of this advert is anyone interested in buying a car. Which in Citroen's advert they show their car throughout the entirety of their advert. Promoting it using the tag line "alive with technology" this also means that if you are looking for a car with lots of gadgets and general technology that this is the car for you, therefore you are the adverts intended target audience.

As seen as this is broadcast on television and on the internet (specifically video sites) this advert can be seen by anyone, in this case the content is important due to the age of the viewer fortunately the advert has no violence, gore, swearing or any other content that would make it unsuitable for all audiences.

Every Runner Has A Reason Documentary

Purpose

The purpose of this documentary is to tell the story of a homeless runner planning on running a marathon to raise money for charity that helped him out when he needed help as he narrates about his life.

Form

The form of this promotion is a documentary, this is a suitable form to tell a story of inform as it does not have to be fast paced and can be slow and as quick as you want. Also information can be distributed at the pace that you desire rather than having to compress everything into 2 minutes. This documentary is 2 minutes long but documentaries can vary to up to 30 minutes.

In this documentary the pace is very slow, with lots of the footage slown down and shot from various angles, mostly close ups. To tell the story at a moderate pace to match the narration.

Content

The video opens from a low angles with a lens flare to mask to the runner as he explains is love for running and how it makes him feel free. The music played is a slow pace guitar, plucking the strings slowly to match the pace of the speech which is also slow. It is edited to match this as well slowing scenes down to match the strings and the narration. Also the shots shown are edited to match the narration. For example "people don't look at me as a person that's homeless", the shot is then showing him walking down at street pulling all his stuff along with him. The majority of the shots are close up to show his facial expression as he runs. We also have some shots of the scenery and he running through it. This is to show how much he runs and where which is also connoted by the environments being forest like areas, with lots of greenery connoting freedom. To end the documentary it fades out and text appears telling us he plans on attending the San Francisco marathon to earn money for charity. This is used to match the music as it comes to the end and the shots used and their pacing.

Meaning

When we are told about his life we are shown at the low points like when he says he is homeless and when he lists the drugs he's taken we are shown shots of him with his coat on and dragging his stuff, this is used to connote loneliness and make the audience feel pity.

The lighting throughout is varies between very sunny (lens flares appear) and grey sky. The grey sky is used at points when he describes his experiences and the sun is shown when he runs. This contrasts to show a difference is emotion and connotes happiness when its sunny and he's running and sad and down when the sky is grey. This also matches his narration. It is edited this way to match the narration.

We are also shown a few Ariel shots which connotes distance implying he has a long way to go in his struggle through life and is the shot used in the last scene tracking up to the sky to connotes journey and that this is only the start and also used to satisfy the viewer showing a somewhat happy conclusion to the story.

Genre

The genre of the documentary is sport, we know this purely be the title and the content of the video showing us the story of a runner as the majority of the shots are of him running and him narrating about him running.

Audience

The audience is anyone who likes documentaries, non-fiction or sport. We know this because the documentary is of something that is real, telling us the  story of a homeless runner and his struggles.

Looper Trailer (2012)

Purpose

The purpose of this trailer is to advertise the film Looper.

A trailer is the most suitable format to advertise a film as it allows a certain amount of time to be used that would not be available in any other type of audio-visual promotion. This allows the creators to pack as much information about the film as possible.

Form

The form of this piece of advertisement is a trailer. This allows the creator a certain amount of time to convey information about this film and 'sell' it to the viewer. Trailers can vary from 1 minute to 5, but this form of advertising is one of the longest ones and allows the creator to show alot of content that wouldn't have enough time to be shown in others.

In this case we have a science fiction film which especially in modern trailers not much content has to be shown as far as narrative and can focus solely creating mystery and showing action to intrigue to audience. However this trailer is open with its narrative and tells the story to the viewer quite simply by giving snippets of information to audience so they can build in their heads the narrative while switching between out of action from the film.

Content

The trailer is not in order and the time constantly changing from day to night and vise versa. It is edited like this to show the best possible action or scene at the time that is fit for purpose and shows us that there is action throughout the film and that it takes place over multiple days. It follows the typical style of a action film trailer style with blinking effects (00.32), gunfights (00.43), flashy title cards (01.07), flashes (00.49) and lots of pointing weaponry at the screen (1.49) this is all used to build suspense etc.

The lighting and setting at the beginning of the trailer looks like a farm and connotes and old feel especially since Joe wears at leather jacket. We also have a nearly polar opposite setting in the city however which contrasts well, since its science fiction this transitions works this at the beginning could deliver a completely different message to that at the end. This shows us variety in the trailers use of shots and scenes.

Meaning

The content of the trailer is shown from the perspective of Joe our main character who narrates about his job as a Looper while showing footage his job. It then cuts to various other pieces of action from the film and Joe expands upon his previous narration while being shown action from the film. During the trailer the narration is on hold and bits of dialogue can be heard to back up the scenes playing and to expand on the general narrative of the trailer.

The trailer is laid out like this to create a calm beginning where we get the gist of the story and as it unfolds the trailer becomes quicker in pace and becomes more action orientated to build possible suspense and intrigue the viewer. This is a technique used in a lot of modern trailers and is used for the reason that it is highly effective.

Genre

The genre of the film falls under hard science fiction, this film is specifically about time travel and its effect on society from the point of an underground movement or a Mafia type organization.

We can tell this by the premise given to us during the trailer "time travel has not been invented yet, but in 30 years it will be..." this lines tells us that this is about time travel. "I am one of many specialized assassins called Loopers". This lines connotes a that there is some sort of organization that is like a Mafia and that the story takes place from this persons perspective. It also gives us an insight into how society has possible changed according to this where law is not as heavily enforce by services like the police and more by these Mafia type organizations. "We eliminate people from the future" also reinforces both of my previous points.

Audience

The intended target audience is those interested in science fiction in general or specifically time travel or social science. Which is made clear through the fact that its fictional through its narrative and general content like its CG elements.

This trailer would be shown on the internet, as an advert before a film and on TV making it easily available to pretty much anyone. The trailer itself does not have any physical violence gore or swearing, it is heavily implied though. This does mean it can be shown as a piece of advertising it most audiences. The actual film however is a 15.

The Road Movie Trailer (2009)

Purpose

The purpose of the trailer is to advertise the film The Road.

Trailers can vary from 1 minute to 5, but this form of advertising is one of the longest ones and allows the creator to show a lot of content that wouldn't have enough time to be shown in others.

Content

Like the Looper trailer there is suspense building throughout the trailer with the use of music and the speed of the transitions between scenes. Edited to show the most suitable seen to match the music, tone and pace; (02.13) shows a axe swing to cut of the music and bring the suspense down. The suspense it then brought back using the same techniques to build to end the trailer.

The use of colour also changes (0.15) onwards from the before and after of the apocalypse striking. Which helps set up the tone. The trailer also makes uses of many long shots to show you a wide view of this broken world and the apocalyptic landscape which helps set up the world in the mind of the viewer. The shot type used the most is definitely close up whether it by of the characters, an object, a gun etc. This shows us the importance of the relationship between the characters and how close they are (father and son) and with objects like rings and guns shows us the importance of theses objects and how they highly dictate to the outcome of the scene (01.18) and the trailer makes use of these types of scenes a few times to show how this world is.

Meaning

The story in the trailer is set up as a news report at first (heavily used in modern trailers of the genre) and is plays out to set up the apocalyptic world and that our main characters are survivors (so far) which is backed up by the conversation between the couple that is slice and diced in between the news report. We are then shown various shots from the film of are characters surviving as the trailer expands on narration. After this we have the tension at its highest playing the action sequences that flash and cut, the trailer cuts back in forth between action and later ends. This is very reminiscent of Looper and is used for the same effect to build suspense etc.

Throughout the trailer the most promoted features is survival (a key factor in post-apocalyptic movies) and is heavily connoted that there is some sort of imminent death that is going to happen (01.18) (02.13)

Genre

The genre of the film is post-apocalyptic. This is made clear by the general environments shown; broken buildings, their clothing etc and the lines "One event shall change the face of the planet", "Hide", "Run", "how many people do you think are still alive?" etc which are all elements used in this genre of film and style of trailer.

Audience

The intended target audience is anyone interested in post-apocalyptic films, specifically that of survival and the social change after the apocalypse.

This trailer would be shown on the internet, as an advert before a film and on TV making it easily available to pretty much anyone. The trailer has violence gore etc and would be shown specifically during adverts at 15+ rated films before it starts.

V for Vendetta Trailer

Purpose

The purpose of the trailer is to advertise the film V for Vendetta.

Trailers can vary from 1 minute to 5, but this form of advertising is one of the longest ones and allows the creator to show a lot of content that wouldn't have enough time to be shown in others.

Content

At the start of the trailer we start with lots of close ups to build the mystery around the story. Which is then moved along by flashes and introduces shot types like long and establishing to start the introduction along with action scenes to build further suspense and mystery. We also see a shift in lighting between the scenes that connote some sort of flashback possibly (01.24) (01.51). We also have denotes torture (02.33) which helps build the suspense level.

Meaning

The trailer starts with an introduction of the government and their reminiscent Nazi regime, setting the world up that the government has too much power bringing unjust law and order; showing a women being assaulted by a group of men. We have the build of music building up at this point. At this point we are shown V our main protagonist who has short elements of dialogue along with other characters, along with various action sense that follow through when the music reaches its peak. The music the changes at (00.45) and brings the mood down there is further narration and less dramatical scenes. The action then returns along with the music lifting again at (02.18) till the end which ends on a title card.

Like the other trailers I've analysed they all aim for the same technique over building suspense and dipping and rising which is effective that why its so common, its a nice way of creating mild tension and heavy action integrated together to create a serious trailer.

The trailer connotes a revolutionary feel with shots like (00.29) which looks like a Naziesque government which is then followed by "people should not be afraid of their government" which denotes an implication that some sort of revolution is going to happen. It is also re-implied by the entrance of our main character which the trailer denotes murders people that seem to have power within the government.

Genre

The genre is political thriller with an alternative history dystopia style. We know this because of the aforementioned revolution implications. We know its a dystopia type world due to shots of people being assaulted in the street (00.40). We also know its alternative history because the setting looks like modern London but it run by a fascist regime Naziesque government.

Audience

The audience would be anyone interested in the above genres, and as I said with "The Road" this would be only shown at certain times on TV and as adverts in a Cinema with a similar age rating, so the viewer should be of roughly 15+.

The Matrix Trailer

Purpose

The purpose of the trailer is to advertise the film The Matrix

A trailer is the most suitable format to advertise a film as it allows a certain amount of time to be used that would not be available in any other type of audio-visual promotion. This allows the creators to pack as much information about the film as possible.

Form

The form of this piece of advertisement is a trailer. This allows the creator a certain amount of time to convey information about this film and 'sell' it to the viewer. Trailers can vary from 1 minute to 5, but this form of advertising is one of the longest ones and allows the creator to show a lot of content that wouldn't have enough time to be shown in others.

Content

In the beginning of the trailer we are introduced by short establishing shots and text to build an idea about the film which as the music transitions we hear dialogue and switch to close ups of characters and as the trailer progresses we get long shots medium close ups and action sequences and in the final section showcases its finest action scenes and ended with a title card. The lighting has a very green tint and connotes a fake feeling (in this case fake world) and fits the urban environment.

Meaning

Unlike the previous trailers the theme used is not as bombastic and vouches for a opera start to while the text appears till (00.40) where the track goes deep and subtly introduces a techno backing that then is replaced for violins and drums which is when the track shifts to a more typical track (like previous ones) which is reaches its peak in the final 30 seconds. This track has heavy denotations of a action-thriller style and is effective in the same way as the previous analysis's.

Genre

The Matrix is a science fiction action thriller. We know this by the use scenes like (00.42) using abilities like levitation and lines like "...how would you know the difference between the dream world and the real world". Would also know its an action thriller from action like (01.39) (02.08).

Audience

The audience is anyone interested in the above genres and would be showed in cinemas under the circumstances of the previous analysis.

Cloverfield Trailer

Purpose

The purpose of the trailer is to advertise the film Cloverfield

A trailer is the most suitable format to advertise a film as it allows a certain amount of time to be used that would not be available in any other type of audio-visual promotion. This allows the creators to pack as much information about the film as possible.

Form

The form of this piece of advertisement is a trailer. This allows the creator a certain amount of time to convey information about this film and 'sell' it to the viewer. Trailers can vary from 1 minute to 5, but this form of advertising is one of the longest ones and allows the creator to show a lot of content that wouldn't have enough time to be shown in others.

Content

The  appeal of Cloverfield lies in the fact that it all shot from a camera so its perpetually in first person and the shot types don't necessarily change. Given this fact the camera is shaken throughout and we are not (at times) given a solid perspective of what is going on. Which is heavily captured in the first few minutes of the trailer as its quite hard to tell what is going on as there are many flickers, and scene swaps and as far as audio there is no track just crowd noises. At (00.36) we get an rough introduction to our main character and the gist of the story. After this we are shown more flickers and the music goes very low pitched with an eerie feeling. This is all used to create maximum confusion and mystery and leave the viewer in the dark but with enough idea to get the gist that there some sort of monster. The whole film also seems to take place at night which adds to the horror element which helps to reinforce tension.

Meaning

The trailer is introduced by text explaining the circumstances of the footage. The trailer then proceeds to show us a party followed quickly by the head of the statue of liberty rolling down the street and our main characters introduction turning the camera on himself. We are then showed convoluted footage from the film of people running away, hiding and other types of scenes typically found in a monster film. We are then shown a helicopter crash from the cameras perspective and ends with the title card.

This connotes a survival feel to the film as they spend a lot of time running away and in fear, and also possible death for somebody given the line "If your watching this..." which usually has an denotes the users death.

Genre

Cloverfield is a science fiction found footage monster film. We know this due to lines like "...7 hours ago something attacked the city..." and the heavy denotation of monster(s) appearing (01.09).

Audience

The audience would be those who are interested in this particular type of filmography, monster films or JJ Abrams. The film is also a 15 so it would only be shown in selected places (like previously)

Alien Trailer

Form

Trailers can vary from 1 minute to 5, but this form of advertising is one of the longest ones and allows the creator to show a lot of content that wouldn't have enough time to be shown in others.

Content

The majority of the trailer is shot in close up to create a convoluted and mystery setting which is reinforced by the fact it repeats the same scenes alot to keep the mystery and leave the viewer in the dark; which is Ripley running in the dark and the cats face. This is one of the most effective trailers I've seen and still builds tension despite me watching it multiple times.

Meaning

In the beginning we have a build up to an egg being tracked and viewed from various angles. Then we are show people in what appear to be spacemen suits and show very dark imagery of people running away, faces (like the reappearing cat) and pieces of action. Before cutting to the shot in space. This has heavy denotations of fear, death, despair, horror, aliens and exploration. Which is evident by its use of music and scenes like (01.45).

Its use of music is quite at first but then builds an eerie and tense feel before becoming really quick paced and when the tension is at its peak from the visuals the drop to the final shot of space. It also reinforces fear by always using dark lighting throughout.

Genre

Alien is a science fiction horror film which we know purely from the title and its use of eerie music. Flashing faces and gradually build in tension through music to a almost scream-like faze at the end. Where it cuts and we see the famous tag line.

Audience

The audience is anyone interested in the horror genre or a science fiction this film is an 18 so would be under strict conditions to where it is shown, the most likely places being in the cinema and on the internet.
